Azamgarh is one of the most popular districts in the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern part of India. This district is more than 300 years old and has been in existence since the time of Muslim rulers and finds mention in India's freedom movements too. Azamgarh, like many important towns of North India which are located on the banks of some major river, is situated on the banks of "Tons River". Azamgarh came into being sometime around 1665, founded by a mighty landlord by the name Azam Khan. While the town was named after him, the fort 'Azmatgarh' was named after his brother Azmat Khan.
